Flagler’s fall commencement to be held Dec. 15

Dec 4, 2018

Flagler College will hold its fall commencement ceremony Saturday, Dec. 15, for graduating seniors. Approximately 153 students will receive diplomas at the Flagler College Gymnasium.

The commencement speaker will be Dr. Jenny Zorn, ‘80, provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State University Bakersfield.

Zorn has worked in academia since 1989 and has served as provost and vice president of academic affairs since 2015. After arriving at CSU Bakersfield, she quickly established a focus on diversity and inclusion; she is now a respected authority on gender diversity issues and veterans initiatives through the programs she’s helped create.

Zorn has initiated several programs including a women’s affinity group, a retired faculty association, launched a first generation initiative and expanded the veteran’s center. She often sponsors faculty and students to attend diversity-focused conferences including the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.

As a social sciences major at Flagler and a geography student at The Ohio State University, where she received her master’s and doctorate, Zorn began her career teaching geography. During that time, she served in leadership capacities for the California Geographical Society, the Association of American Geographers and the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers. Her work focused on women in the labor force, geographic education and international education.

She has been awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award from the National Council on Geographic Education.

Flagler College’s commencement begins at 9 a.m. on Dec. 15 and is not open to the public. The procession will begin around 8:50 a.m. from the statue of Henry Flagler, located at 74 King Street. Traffic will be temporarily held for no more than 10 minutes.

The college’s Public Administration program will graduate 16 seniors in a second ceremony later that day at 4 p.m. in the Flagler College Lewis Auditorium.

The Public Administration Program at Flagler College is designed specifically to meet the educational and career objectives of public sector professionals and includes courses such as management, program evaluation, public budgeting, human resources, administrative ethics, public policy and grant writing.
